Pasar pendekar laut (PPL)
Pasar Pendekar Laut is an initiative to improve and nurture supplementary sources of income for the fishermen of Mukim Tanjung Kupang. In 2016, Shalan Jum’at was unable to convince the existing fishmongers to raise the prices paid to local fishermen, so he tapped on funding provided by Forest City to set up his own seafood market. From the catch of just 3 fishermen, it is now a fully registered organisation under the Fisheries Department (My Komuniti Perikanan Pendekar Laut (MyKP-PL)) serving about 40 fishermen and their extended families. Located at Pengkalan Sungai Che Manan in Kg Pendas, MyKP-PL also includes Warung Citarasa Tanjung Kupang and Rakit MyKP Pendekar Laut.
Buy fresh seafood – help the local community
Pasar Pendekar Laut serves seafood caught by local fishermen in our nearshore waters – we do not import fish from elsewhere. The artisanal fishermen who work with us head out for about 5 hours at a time, sometimes more than once a day to catch the freshest seafood from our rivers and strait. This is a more sustainable means of fishing (compared to deep or open sea trawlers or purse seines) and supports the B40 (bottom 40 economic percentile) community in Mukim Tanjung Kupang. Fishermen are paid twice what they would earn elsewhere here, and 95% of the price paid goes to the local community (the balance goes to the purchase of ice and plastic bags).
Warung Citarasa Tanjung Kupang
Warung Citarasa provides local women with an additional source of income as they preserve and showcase our traditional cuisine. The foodstall specialises in assam pedas Johor and almost everything is locally sourced; we support local farmers by buying their fruit, vegetables and other ingredients. This is also where Kelab Alami meals and refreshments are sourced from. Warung Citarasa Tg Kupang helps to improve Pasar Pendekar Laut sales as customers are urged to buy seafood at the market and have it cooked there and then – the scent of freshly cooked seafood is hard to beat!
Rakit MyKP Pendekar Laut
This fishing platform is not just a venue for recreational fishermen to test their skills, but is also our experimental site for breeding fish, mussels and sea grapes. It was built by hand by our Pendekar Laut fishermen, with funds scraped together without a major funder, and materials recycled from dismantled houses and older fishing platforms. This is truly a community effort that is already helping the fishermen earn additional income. We had huge support from our state and district Fisheries Departments to make it happen. The fishermen have also put down natural fish aggregation devices which have attracted baitfish that they use for their own fishing, as well as to feed the fish that they put into the nets (no chemicals or pellets!).

Sustainable Fisheries Programme
Our fishermen are our habitat experts and they are key to our local habitat, fauna & flora research. They also abide by minimum quality requirements (to release crabs that are too small or have just moulted), and to release endangered species. As they do that, they record data such as size, weight, sex and location, as well as take videos and photos of the specimen. They are given a token amount for their effort. The fishermen notify us of problems at sea, changes in marine conditions and species movements and other climate change impacts. Their effort has helped us identify myriad rare and endangered species that we never knew existed here!
