Meet THE FOUNDERS

Picture

Shalan Jum'at

Kelab Alami’s founder is a local from Mukim Tanjung Kupang who is dedicated to helping young people become responsible citizens and encouraging fishermen to adapt to the challenges of change. He believes that with passion and teamwork, anything is possible, and that honesty and good intentions are key to self-empowerment. He also leads the My Komuniti Perikanan (MyKP) Pendekar Laut initiative.

Dr Serina Rahman

Kelab Alami’s principal advisor and co-founder first arrived in Mukim Tanjung Kupang in 2007 to educate local youth about their coastal habitats. However, she chose to remain and support the community’s self-driven efforts. She is currently a full-time Lecturer in the Southeast Asian Studies Department at the National University of Singapore and an Associate Fellow at the ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute.

Kelab Alami works to empower the community of Mukim Tanjung Kupang to engage in and benefit from development through traditional and citizen science, alternative income generation, and environmental protection. As a grassroots organisation led by the local community, we are supported by a network of experts and advisors from across Malaysia and beyond. Founded in 2008 as an environmental education club for local youth in this fishing community, we have since expanded our focus to help develop supplementary income sources in response to declining fish catches. Science underpins all of our work. Our fishermen are our habitat experts, while the broader community is trained as citizen scientists. We combine traditional ecological knowledge with academic science to create unique, holistic insights, which we share with our visitors. Ultimately, our goal is to establish, lead, and manage a Community Conserved Area (CCA) on the western side of the Tebrau Strait.
