Meet THE FOUNDERS
Shalan Jum'atKelab Alami's founder is a Mukim Tanjung Kupang local who wants to see local youth become useful citizens, and urges his fishermen step up to survive the onslaught of change. He believes that if we work with heart, we can achieve anything – and that teamwork, honesty and good intentions can help us help ourselves.

Dr Serina RahmanKelab Alami’s principal advisor and co-founder first landed in Mukim Tanjung Kupang in 2007 to teach local youth about their coastal habitats, but ended up staying to support the community’s efforts to help themselves. She is a full-time Lecturer at the Southeast Asian Studies Department, National University of Singapore, and an Associate Fellow at the ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute. Also, an Iskandar Malaysia Social Hero Award Winner for Environmental Protection (2014); Malaysia’s Ambassador for Citizen Science Asia, a UN-affiliated organisation and
Channel News Asia Climate Warrior (2021). |
Kelab Alami works to enable and empower the community of Mukim Tanjung Kupang to participate in and benefit from development using traditional and citizen science, developing alternative incomes, and protecting natural environment. We are a grassroots organisation led and mobilised by the local community, facilitated by a network of experts and advisors from all over Malaysia and beyond. We began in 2008 as an environmental education club for the youth of this fishing community, but now work to nurture supplementary income sources given decreasing fishcatch. Science is the basis of our work. Our fishermen are our habitat experts, and the wider community is trained as citizen scientists. We combine traditional ecological knowledge with the principles of academic science for unique holistic information that is shared with our guests. Our final goal is to establish, lead and manage a Community Conserved Area (CCA) in our western end of the Tebrau Strait.
