About Kelab Alami

In November 2009, Kelab Pencinta Alam Tanjung Kupang, Johor was officially registered as an environmental education club for community youth. Founded by Shalan Jum'at and Serina Rahman, the programme trained fishing village youth as habitat experts to work as ecotourism guides and to scientifically monitor seagrass and mangrove habitats. Founder & THE BOSS

Shalan Jum'at

Through Kelab Alami, Shalan engaged with the village youth to keep them on a more positive track and away from vice. His vision continues to drive this programme so that the wider community can participate in and benefit from the development that is taking place around them. He registered a social enterprise, Anak Alami Enterprise (Business Registration No. 002222420-D) that manages all elements of Kelab Alami, and Koperasi Alami Johor Berhad to oversee the co-operative.

Founder & Principal Advisor

Serina Rahman

Serina is a teacher, conservation scientist and environmental anthropologist. She works extensively in community development and empowerment. Her role in the organisation is to enable the community to realise the goals and vision put forward by Kelab Alami, based on what the community has asked for and/or needs. She liaises with government agencies, potential sponsors, and academic or other supporters of the programme, as well as fund-raising.

KELAB ALAMI Graduates & Admin Staff

A full-time crew of two Kelab Alami youth graduates and a phalanx of Kelab Alami youth ranger part-timers decide on the various Kelab environmental educational and cultural heritage programmes they want to do. Among their many motivations are to prove that regular village folks can become community researchers and enablers, habitat managers and environmental education teachers and licensed nature guides.
