PASAR PENDEKAR LAUT

Translated directly as the 'Sea Warrior's Market', this is a Kelab Alami initiative led by Shalan Jum'at, our founder. His goal is to ensure that the fishermen get fair earnings for their catch, and that customers understand the difficulties faced by fishermen in their work. Since opening in 2016, our fishermen now get double the income for what they bring in, and also get support for boat use, engine repairs, petrol and other needs. Shalan also works to preserve our local fishing heritage by ensuring that all the younger fishermen learn the crafts of net and long-line making and incorporating the sharing of that heritage with ecotourism guests.

FISHERFOLK OF PASAR PENDEKAR LAUT

More than 30 fishermen are part of Kelab Alami's Pasar Pendekar Laut initiative (at Pak Ngah's Jetty at Sg Che' Manan). Here's a quick introduction to the men and women who put seafood on people's table and continue our very special artisanal fishing heritage.

Artisanal & SUSTAINABLE Fisheries

The fisherfolk of Mukim Tanjung Kupang have always been nearshore and inshore artisanal fishermen. This means that they largely fish in the Sg Pendas and Sg Pulai Rivers and the Tebrau Strait. More recently, because catch has been on the decline, they venture further into the Melaka Strait and international waters. However, they only use small 15-20 feet boats with 15-40hp engines. It is a long journey out to the Melaka Straits fraught with myriad risks. But when there is a need to put food on the table, they will do what it takes.

FISHING GEAR & BOATS

Kelab Alami works to bring all the fishermen together. We support them with nets, boats, and engines.

ECOTOURISM SERVICES

Fish catch today is nowhere near as bountiful as it was 10 years ago. In order to ensure that our fishermen continue to have some form of income, we have roped them into our community ecotourism efforts. This includes getting several of them licensed to pilot tourism passenger boats (sponsored by Forest City) and helping them get comfortable with speaking to guests about net-making and fishing heritage.
