CULTURAL Heritage of mukim tanjung kupang

Kelab Alami promotes other efforts from our Mukim Tanjung Kupang community to preserve and share stories about our cultural heritage. We often include visits to these sites or exchanges with performers as part of our curated field trips.

ZAPIN PEKAJANG

Zapin is a traditional dance form unique to Johor. But our mukim is home to a special variety of the performance art, created by the late En. Zapin from Kg Pekajang. Today his grandson, Akmal keeps the tradition alive, teaching students at SMK Tg Adang the dance form. While SMKTA has a special studio and exhibition of our zapin history, we often also invite them to the jetty to perform and teach guests our variation of the dance.

Chinese history and heritage

Our western end of the Tebrau strait was one of the first tax and export goods reporting centres for Johor, opened in 1867. Run by local kangchus (Chinese plantation owners), our mukim used to be home to a large Chinese community of both farmers and fishermen. Unfortunately many of them were massacred in WWII but the descendents of those who survived are still with us in the mukim. We share their history and heritage as part of curated field trips, arranging visits to our local temple in Kg Pok, where Uncle Seng will share stories of their ancestors, the  Sook Ching massacres and also take us on a tour of the temple grounds and the memorial to those who were lost in those terrible times.
